In Flag City USA, False Obama Rumors Are Flying

On his corner of College Street, Jim Peterman stares at the four American flags planted in his front lawn and rubs his forehead. Peterman, 74, is a retired worker at Cooper Tire, a father of two, an Air Force veteran and a self-described patriot. He took one trip to Washington in…

On the television in his living room, Peterman has watched enough news and campaign advertisements to hear the truth: Sen. Barack Obama, born in Hawaii, is a Christian family man with a track record of public service. But on the Internet, in his…

Al Giordano: Missing: The Field’s DNC Convention Credential

Two weeks ago, The Field — reporting on the US presidential election — moved to a new location:
http://narconews.com/thefield
It’s been quite the ride. The former host, on June 11, censored us, then disappeared six months of archives from public view, then re-routed the site to the wrong forwarding address.

Just two weeks old, the new and improved The Field now has, according to Technorati, 84 incoming links from other blogs (added to the 2,424 incoming already into Narco News, and another 892 incoming to The Narcosphere section of the same…

Obama worker, Bush pastor linked to Dobson-bashing

Obama has said so many things that are totally against God’s word that it is scary.

“He doesn't speak for me when he uses religion as a wedge to divide; He doesn't speak for me when he speaks as the final arbiter on the meaning of the Bible; James Dobson doesn't speak for me when he uses the beliefs of others as…

James Dobson vs. Barack Obama

Peter Wehner, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and a former deputy assistant to President Bush, writes that the attacks on Obama leveled by Focus on the Family’s James Dobson fall terribly short of being fair and honest.

Dobson paraphrased this as "unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe in." But that's not what Obama was saying at all. Rather, he was arguing that in a pluralistic nation like ours, politics…

TIME: Is Dobson’s Obama Hit Backfiring?

After years of attacking Democrats with relative impunity for their supposed moral failings, Evangelical leader James Dobson surely didn’t expect to suffer much of a backlash when he trained his sights on Barack Obama.

The website was the handiwork of a coalition of Christian leaders headed by Kirbyjon Caldwell, the Texas pastor and Bush family friend who led the benediction at George W. Bush's first Inauguration. The group came up with the idea for the site…

Supreme Court Rules that Americans Have a Right to Own Guns

The Supreme Court says Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices’ first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history. The court’s 5-4 ruling strikes down the District of Columbia’s 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, straddling both sides of the issue, said merely that the court did not find an unfettered right to bear arms and that the ruling ''will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions…

Senators To Government: Don’t Search Laptops At Airports!

Advocacy groups and some legal experts told Congress on Wednesday that it was unreasonable for federal officials to search the laptops of United States citizens when they re-enter the country from traveling abroad.

But Nathan A. Sales, an assistant professor at the George Mason University School of Law, said in a statement: “The reason the home has enjoyed uniquely robust privacy protections in the Anglo-American legal tradition is because it…

8 Reasons You Should Not Expect an Inheritance

Youve probably heard about the bumper sticker, even if you havent seen it. Its the one on Cadillacs in Florida and Lexuses in Arizona that says Im spending my childrens inheritance.? With the pressures on nest eggs growing every year, most people will end up spending every dime before they die.

Even if the parents have money left over, the ones who didn’t have custody of the children may be less inclined to pass an inheritance on to them. “The ties that parents have with kids and their interest in supporting them…

Bad Apple Theory Is Rotten

The “few bad apples” theory put forth by the administration for the Abu Gharib is only partly true. The bad apples are at the top of the pyramid

In his opening statement, Levin asked: "[H]ow did it come about that American military personnel stripped detainees naked, put them in stress positions, used dogs to scare them, put leashes around their necks to humiliate them, hooded…

Deals With Iraq Are Set to Bring Oil Giants Back

Four Western oil companies are in the final stages of negotiations this month on contracts that will return them to Iraq, 36 years after losing their oil concession to nationalization as Saddam Hussein rose to power.

The no-bid contracts are unusual for the industry, and the offers prevailed over others by more than 40 companies, including companies in Russia, China and India. The contracts, which would run for one to two years and are relatively small by…

U.S Official Fired For Not Approving Questionable Iraq Funds

The Army official who managed the Pentagons largest contract in Iraq says he was ousted from his job when he refused to approve paying more than $1 billion in questionable charges to KBR, the Houston-based company that has provided food, housing and other services to American troops.

Along with the auditors, he said, he pushed for months to get KBR to provide data to justify the spending, including approximately $200 million for food services. Mr. Smith soon felt under pressure to ease up on KBR, he said. He and his boss, Maj….

War Powers - Why This Court Keeps Rebuking This President

The most important thing we do is not doing,? Justice Louis D. Brandeis once said of the Supreme Courts abiding humility, its overwhelming preference to allow the people, through their elected representatives, to govern themselves.

“War opens dangers that do not exist at other times,” Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once wrote. He had earlier been the author of the Supreme Court’s unanimous opinion in a 1919 case upholding the conviction of…

Italy Using Soldiers to Patrol Cities in Order to Curb Crime

The Italian government has defended its decision to use soldiers to patrol cities in an effort to curb crime, rejecting criticism that it will “militarise” the streets. The government announced that up to 2,500 soldiers, some of whom have served in Afghanistan, would be made available for a trial period of 6 months to help police in difficult areas

Italy's main trade unions said rather than using soldiers the government should make better use of 25,000 police who are doing desk work, and the mayor of Turin said the move was “populist demagoguery” that would hurt tourism and…

NYT: Obama’s Tax Plan Better for Middle Class than McCain’s

According to the [Tax Policy Center’s] calculation, the middle of the middle class would see taxes cut by $1,042 a year. Under Mr. McCain’s plan, taxes for people in that category would also fall, but by $319. The largest chunk of the benefits would go to those making $2.8 million a year or more.

“McCain is picking the areas where rates go up and ignoring the areas where Obama is trying to rebalance the tax code so that taxpayers would save,” said John Irons, research and policy director at the Economic Policy…

Another Backfire in Iraq - Status of Forces Agreement update

Secret negotiations between U.S. and Iraqi officials over a multi-year security agreement aren’t so secret anymore. Details have been dribbling out over the last several days. Bush claims he is trying to make things easier for his successor. Paley and DeYoung write that the American demand for 58 long-term bases in Iraq is actually a compromise.

Bush held a joint press conference this morning with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In his response to a question from Washington Post reporter Dan Eggen, he tried to spin the dissent in Iraq as a positive sign, expressed no concern about the…

Texas judge under guard after polygamist ruling

The home of a judge in Texas who ordered the removal of 440 children from a polygamist ranch is under guard after Utah and Arizona authorities warned of “enforcers” from the sect, a newspaper reported today. Police assigned to Judge Barbara Walther’s San Angelo, Texas, house were provided dossiers and photos of 16 men and women deemed a threat…

Parker told church leaders the post could be construed as a threat, according to the newspaper. They contacted Medvecky and had him remove the judge's address, he said. But her telephone numbers remain on the site, which describes Walther as…
