Who was more important Darwin or Lincoln?

How’s this for a coincidence? Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. As historical facts go, it amounts to little more than a footnote.

As soon as you do start comparing this odd couple, you discover there is more to this birthday coincidence than the same astrological chart (as Aquarians, they should both be stubborn, visionary, tolerant, free-spirited, rebellious, genial…

OnTheCommons.org » Fewer Traffic Signs, Better Safety?

Imagine what would happen if you took down road signs and traffic signals. Yet another perfect example that anarchy just can’t work because people are all inherently evil and they all seek to take advantage of one another if there isn’t some big leviathan state institution dictating their every move. No, wait, that’s bullshit. The surprising thing

The Dutch town of Drachten adopted this unsafe is safe? approach in 2007 and found that casualties at one junction dropped from thirty-six over the previous four years to only two in the two years following the removal of traffic lights….

Teen Hacker May Get 38 Years in Jail for Changing His Grades

It could be a long time before Omar Khan goes to college: as long as 38 years, according to Orange County prosecutors, who have arrested and charged the 18-year-old student with breaking into his prestigious high school and hacking into computers to change his test grades from Fs to As.

Master keys are easy to obtain now. A student merely needs to "borrow" the master and make some measurements, or manage to steal an actual lock and an ordinary key for it. There are directions on the net for…

Democracies Can’t Compromise on Core Values

As the American president embarked on his farewell tour of Europe last week, Der Spiegel, echoing the sentiments of a number of leading newspapers on the Continent, pronounced “Europe happy to see the back of Bush.” Virtually everyone seems to believe that George W. Bush’s tenure has undermined trans-Atlantic ties…

The idea that strong identities are an inherent threat to democracy and peace became further entrenched in Europe in the wake of World War II. Exponents of what I call postidentity theories – postnationalism, postmodernism and…

Dolphin disaster: Why we must learn from this before to Late

They died just as they had lived - following their natural instincts to stick together. Up the muddy river, running inland from Falmouth, the dolphins swam, responding to the distress calls of their fellow animals. It was the worst case of such a mass stranding on British shores for nearly three decades.

The world and nature are wonderful. Is it over-consumption, selfishness and greed that blinds us to the destruction that comes from putting profit before all else? The sea has been used as a dumping ground and war arena - what do we…

Bob Dylan: He’s Got Everything He Needs, He’s An Artist…

The legendary singer/songwriter has an art exhibition opening in London next week and loves to talk about it. But you risk his 1,000-yard stare if you touch on his personal life. Dylan welcomes me inside for the interview with a soft handshake and a volley of courtesies.

Such reticence has earned him a reputation as rock's grumpy old man, a curmudgeon who refuses to appear grateful that he is revered and adored. But whether or not he intends it to do so, such determined self-protection merely enhances the…

Paganella: Memorial Day reminds us of the cost of freedom

Memorial Day is special. In nearby cemeteries in Metrowest are Medal of Honor recipients, the highest honor bestowed for bravery by the Congress of the United States.
They all chose to stand and fall with those who feel it is an honor to serve their country. Memorial Day reminds me that freedom is not free.

Memorial Day is special. This special day reminds me of another Memorial Day at St. Tarcisius Cemetery in Framingham. I pause and reflect. I gaze at the hundreds of American flags freshly replaced at the veteran's gravesites each year by those…

A ‘blowout’ victory for McCain in November? Is It Possible?

The Politico writes this morning that “many top GOP strategists believe McCain can defeat Obama — and by a margin exceeding Bush’s Electoral College victory in 2004.” Among the 10 strategists interviewed by Politico for this story, there was near-uniform belief that had any other Republican been nominated, the partys prospects would be nil….

The case they make for a comfortable McCain win is not beyond reason. Begin with the 2004 electoral map. Add Iowa and Colorado to Obamas side, since both are considered states Obama could pick off. Then count McCain victories in New Hampshire…

Prisoned for 27 years for doing nothing..

James Woodard is slowly returning to life. He is starting over after spending 27 years behind bars. He was wrongly imprisoned and cleared by DNA.
His SSN and birth certificate are still missing, he still cannot start his life being a free man.

In one aspect at least, Woodard and the 16 others are lucky; the evidence that freed them was preserved even after their appeals were exhausted and the courts finalized their convictions. If they had been tried in a county or city that has no…
